These last couple of weeks I have been translating documents that are heavily filled with medical terms (virus and cromosomes related, mind you!) so I found words that I had never heard of before and I couldn't even find them in regular dictionaries. Thanks to a friend of mine who gave me The American Heritage Dictionary of The English Language back in 1998, this 3-inch thick dictionary really came in handy! Here are a couple of words I never heard of before: Ploidy and Zoonosis

I got an accident a couple weeks ago that caused third degree burns on my left hand. My husband suggested to take a picture or two of the wounds just for a reminder to be more careful next time around. But showing close-up pictures of them is way too gross, so I decided just to show a little part of it in 'less scary' kind of picture. So, here it is. Notice my burned hand? The worst ones were my palm and wrist that [believe me] you don't wanna see!!

My relatives came to visit me today after learning from my parents that I got an accident. They cooked me lunch, made me laugh, and my soon to be 4-yr old grand niece kept me entertained the whole time during their stay. And, of course, they went swimming while they were here!

Cicak is a common lizard that crawls on the walls here. It's very small (the biggest one I ever saw was only as long and wide as my index finger) but moves very fast. This photo was taken when this tiny lizard crawling on my plant's claypot.

Back when I lived in Bay Area, California, I read a lot. I could finish a lot of books in a month. I carried a book to work so I could read it during my 45-minutes bart ride.

But I read less since I returned to Indonesia, which is not good. Now my books are just lined up on the shelf collecting dust. Hopefully I will find times to read them one of these days.

Inspired by Christmas lights that I have never had (because I don't celebrate Christmas), I used the city lights as the background of this picture which was taken at my porch.

JEWELRY

I don't care much about jewelry. The only jewelry I always wear is my wedding ring. May be because I grew up with boys (I'm the only daughter of three) so I've been a bit tomboy. Every now and then though, when my grown-up nieces came by, they often took me shopping for jewelries. They advised me how 'this one' and 'that one' looked good on me. I did buy some but most of them have never been worn. The necklace on the above picture for instance: I bought it three years ago (I think), but has never been worn, not even once. What a waste, I know.

Despite playing alone, Salma was all happy and laugh all the time. She surely missed her cousin who usually played with her, but she proved to be a self-suffcient little girl who can be happy during the absence of her best friend. This photo is the evidence!

AFTER 2 YEARS BEDRIDDEN...

After being in-and-out of hospital for 2 years, undergoing multiple surgeries, eating through G-tube for 6 months at home, losing 110lbs of his weight and 10 days coma, my husband’s condition started to show signs of improvement in the middle of 2007.

He started doing physical therapy all by himself (he refused having a trainer with him). Having been bedridden for 2 years, first thing he needed to learn was how to walk again! So he trained himself to do so with a couple of G-tube hoses dangling on his abdomen! He was so determined to get well (for me!) that in a short period of time he gained his weight to the point where G-tube was no longer needed and by the time those hoses were unplugged, he was able to drive again!

One day, he insisted that we went for a little ride just to see how far he could drive. It was 30 minutes drive and was the first time he drove this far since getting out of hospital. But when we reached to the beach, he suddenly threw up (but I thanked God that it was not blood!) He looked ghostly pale and his body trembling, so we headed home immediately.

He didn’t try to drive far again after that. But one day in Autumn 2007, he couldn’t resist the urge to go out and enjoy the beautiful day. Not only he wanted to start driving the distance again, but he also wanted to know whether or not he still could pick up his camera and shoot.

We made it to Sunol, California, and he DID pick up his camera and took these pictures of me lying down on the road and sat on Water Temple. Now you know why I love these pics!

Extremely crowded places give me terrible headaches, so I have never been crazy about black Friday, and with 5'1" - 95lbs figure, I could be an easy target for stampede. But IF (notice the big IF??) I could go, then I would go for electronic devices, newest gadgets and... high heels!!!

My husband asked me to bring home some corals and shells from Bali. But the monsoon season has caused high tide every day, I hardly found anything on the sand and the heavy rain has swept almost everything on the sand back to the sea. I got a few shells, but no corals, to bring home to my husband though. Oh, well. Better have a few than nothing at all.

Back then, when I was little, it took us 8 straight hours by train to go to the above place where my (late) grandparents lived. As a kid, 8 hours was like forever. But as soon as I set my foot on this land, the trainlag vanished. The cool breeze, the fresh smell of fertile green grass and the sound of crickets just wiped my weariness from the long ride.

From the train station, a horse carriage took us to my grandparents' residence and when I got there I spent hours on the porch just to enjoy the view right in front of me. The green rice fields, the mountains, the birds flying, the occassional water buffalos eating grass, the ducks, the sound of the water running from a tiny creek and the fog that slowly covered the mountain in the evening. The local people would wave "hi" to me when they were passing by, even when they didn't know me. For a city girl like me, these were all luxurious things that I would cherish, forever.

No, these pictures have nothing to do with the Eid Al Adha celebration. They were just taken on the same date as Eid Al Adha, which is a big deal in Indonesia. Just like any other kind of religious holiday, it's the time when family got together and have a quality time together. So did my family. And after a few hours staying at my parents' house, I went home with my niece (who came all the way from out of town) coming along for a quick photo session. Nothing fancy, just a 'while-you're-here' kind of session.

Yes, I have (always) been a bad blogger, haven't posted anything for God knows how long now. Life has been unexpectedly consuming my offline times more than I expected, making blog-updating is nearly impossible. I have, however, taken tons of pictures in the mean time although haven't published them online. So, consider the above picture as a starter, more pics are coming up.

Anyway, the above little model was my parents' neighbor who came over to my place for a swim today. She was quite extrovert, beautiful and intelligent (she was ranked #1 in her class). And when the camera was aimed to her, she would instantly strike a pose without any instruction given. What a natural born model!

Mutiara and Salma met in 2008 when Salma was about 4-mo old. The two hit it off right away. So, even though they're 4 years apart, they're best-friended since day one. Salma is not someone whom any child could get along easily, but with Mutiara, she can't be separated.

Just like other weekends, Salma came over to play with Mutiara. The weather, however, was not quite friendly for the kids to play outside, but the fun had to go on. So, Salma decided to burst bubble while waiting for the weather to clear up.

Half Moon Bay is always foggy, even on summer. But one lucky day, we surprisingly found it blue and beautiful, it only lasted a couple hours though [before the dark fog came back to take over]. Nevertheless, I love this bay.

Confessions of An Economic Hit Man

I first heard about this book when I was living in Bay Area, California. One night I watched John Perkins, a former EHM, was interviewed by one of the TV stations and talked about his upcoming book, Confeesions of an Economic Hit Man. From his description, the book sounded very interesting to me. So I put a mental note to myself that I would have to read it when it's published. But only when I got back to Indonesia (yes, that was a few years later) that I saw his book on the shelf of a bookstore the other day and I immediately bought it.

It was one of the most interesting books I have ever read. It talked about his job as en Economic Hit Man. He tells the gripping tale of the years he spent working for an international consulting firm where his job was to convince underdeveloped countries to accept enormous loans, much bigger than they really needed, for infrastructure development--and to make sure that the development projects were contracted to U. S. multinationals. Once these countries were saddled with huge debts, the American government and the international aid agencies allied with it were able, by dictating repayment terms, to essentially control their economies. It was not unlike the way a loan shark operates--and Perkins and his colleagues didn't shun this kind of unsavory association. They referred to themselves as "economic hit men."

This is a story of international political intrigue at the highest levels. For over a decade Perkins traveled all over the world--Indonesia, Panama, Ecuador, Columbia, Saudi Arabia, Iran--and worked with men like Panamanian president Omar Torrijos, who became a personal friend. He helped implement a secret scheme that funneled billions of Saudi petrodollars back into the U. S. economy, and that further cemented the intimate relationship between the Islamic fundamentalist House of Saud and a succession of American administrations. Perkins' story illuminates just how far economic hit men were willing to go, and unveils the real causes of some of the most dramatic developments in recent history, such as the fall of the Shah of Iran and the invasions of Panama and Iraq. Confessions of an Economic Hit Man, which many people urged Perkins not to write, is a blistering attack on a little-known phenomenon that has had dire consequences for both the lesser-developed countries and for American democracy.

15MM FISHEYE

I was initially skeptical about this lens. I didn't like the "fishy" effect it created.

I remember in 2002, my husband took a picture of Jakarta with this lens to be published (along with his writing) in one of business magazines in Indonesia. When the magazine was finally published, I took a look at the picture and immediately thought it was such a weird photo (too "fishy" to my liking), but in contrary, other people thought it was cool!

So, fast forward to 2007. We were in Tamarac Park of Hayward [California] when my husband asked me to try his 15mm Fisheye lens to capture the arch of the park. Since I didn't bring any wide-angle lens (duh!), I okayed it. To my surprise, I love the results because the effect is less "fishy" when paired with APS-C camera body.

I should also add that it seems this lens has already been equipped with Polarizer since all pictures taken with it look polarized. I'm lovin' it!

No, this is NOT scorpion for sure. I have never seen this creature before, so I'm kinda curious.

Unlike scorpions, this one moves so slow you hardly notice it moving. But it might bite as deadly as scorpions, who knows? The part I hate most (beside the intimidating physical looks) is when you crush the damn thing, it expels acidic odor. Yuccckkkk...!!!

Finally, the Komodo transfer plan controversy ended. The Forestry Minister of the Republic of Indonesia has decided to postpone the transfer and to set up the team to study the move plan as you can find the news HERE.

It was a simple, beautiful wedding of a beautiful couple. And I have captured a lot of emotions involved, tears and laughter. This is why I like wedding photography: the emotions shown on their faces. Priceless.

WHERE'S THE CATCH??

I saw this man from a distance. A quite distance actually (I used 200mm lens to take this picture, mind you). Nothing special about him. Nothing extraordinary, but yet he drew my attention. He, on the other hand, did not even realize that someone, on a so-called tourist boat, was paying a great attention to him.

It might be the irony that drew my attention to him. I was there [at the same place as he was], with those I love, eating fancy foods (as locals call it), carrying fancy stuffs and, of course, spending a few bucks to have a good time. He, in contrary, was there to make a few bucks (which I believe much lesser than I spent there), to make a living.

Every so often he checked his fishing net just to find NOTHING was there. The heat from the sun made my head throbbing, the humidity made it even worse. How could this man 'survive' this?

By the time I left (the sun almost set), he was still there, frequently checking his fishing net, just to find... NOTHING in it. Did he go home empty handed? I don't know, but I hope not.

Digging through my files I found these pictures of beautiful niece of mine whom I once constantly babysat and diaper-changed when she was little. Though I knew all along she would be a heartbreaker one day, boy was I still surprised to see her all grown-up now, turning into a beautiful girl (in-and-out)!! Gosh, where did that cute little girl go?

The last time I saw her was on my wedding day [more than 7 years ago!!] and now look what those years have done to my (once little) niece!!

NEW CONTACT LENSES

I promised Irna that I was going to buy her a pair of fashion contact lenses if I got a new job. A couple weeks later, I did get a new job. So, even though I haven't started working, let alone got paid, I bought her a new pair of contact lens anyway... and there she is, excited and all, with her new contact lenses:

One of a few places I wanted to visit upon returning to Indonesia is National Monument in Jakarta. It brought back pleasant childhood memories when my parents often took me there to enjoy the dancing fountains. They indeed still exist and remains admission-free.
